He celebrates this with the composition of a new collection based on fifty precious poems from his own work. In Deep Ebb a journey is made, from birth to birth. Halfway through an end is reached, or is it a hole, or a cat flap, a portal. Otten ignores the order in which the poems originated. In Deep Ebb, time passes as in a dream, while each poem individually is wide awake, sensory, visual, appealing. A 'thinking landscape' is created, island dunes, unskated Ankeveense Plassen, Frisian lakes, Irish coasts, a Sloterpark. People are known, loved ones are lost; love is declared, God missed. Kees Stip (1913–2001) studied classical literature and made his debut in hiding in 1943 with 'Dieuwertje Diekema', a parody of 'Mária Lécina' by JWF Werumeus Buning, which was distributed anonymously and illegally. It was the start of a great career as a point poet, with countless virtuoso short poems that often featured animals and place names. After the war he worked for de Volkskrant and NRC Handelsblad, among others, and was editor of the Polygoonjournaal. In addition, Stip was active as a screenwriter of films for the Government Information Service and wrote texts for radio and advertising. In 1951 he started writing nonsensical animal verses for de Volkskrant under the pseudonym Trijntje Fop, borrowed from Multatuli. These poems were brought together in The Zoological Poetry Exercises of Trijntje Fop (1955). In the decades that followed, Stip published eight more such collections. He also wrote quite a few socially critical sonnets, including a collection in A child with frog legs (1987). Red Comet returns to us the exceptionally talented woman so long overshadowed by her tragic end. Heather Clark reconstructs Plath's stormy development as a poet and intellectual. We read about her determination not to follow a conventional path, her conflicted relationship with her mother, her struggles with a completely inadequate mental health system, her years in Cambridge and her explosive relationship with Ted Hughes. Red Comet is about a life of complete dedication – not to death but to art.

Lamia Makaddam

"This isn't good poetry, but it's the best I can write." You may have noticed that the sentences are short and the structure fragmented. That's because I only write when I have free time. And by free time I mean the few minutes and hours I spend on the toilet and bath, or when I eat, walk and sleep. Can someone who sleeps actually write? Yes, better poems than these, and then he feeds them to the crows. You can call it leisure poems, that would be a fair name. You will read them in your spare time, which I really hope with all my heart that you will have something better to do, such as talking with your loved ones and playing with your children, because by God, by your God, how can you bear that there are in your house a man is reading on the toilet?

Translated from Arabic by Djûke Poppinga

Lamia Makaddam

Lamia Makaddam's poetry is the outcome of struggle. Raw images are followed by eruptions of tenderness, a dance of incantation in which loved ones, lovers and partners are held, released and buried. No one is innocent in love. In eight departments, Rijneveld investigates what it means to live: in a house, in yourself and in relationships with others. Who or what do you need to be a complete human being? One of the poems tells of the desire to be one space; someone finds a fire escape from this day, puts on a boy instead of a gray vest. The fear of becoming someone the other cannot have—"to mold the wrong man around your bones"—is the greatest danger to the all-too-recognizable and hopeful desire for growth. In a language that gasps and wipes the sweat from the brow, 'Cumin Splitters' is rock solid. In 2020 Marieke Lucas Rijneveld won the International Booker Prize for 'The evening is discomfort'.
